Initially, the answer to this was incredibly easy. Commander Knightshade Valerian would survive an apocalypse, of course. He is the most skilled warrior in the Seelie army, and his strategies are top-notch. Who else but him?
Who else indeed…
I then started to think about what kind of apocalypse might happen. An attack of zombies? A nuclear bomb? A bloodthirsty goddess or three? Well, there’s no doubt in my mind that Knightshade could survive all of those… if he were on his own. But in a group? I doubt it.
Knightshade has one significant weakness: he cares about people. Unlike his mother, Blossom, who only puts her own family first, and his father, Cathal, who would prioritise children over everyone else, Knightshade defends the Seelie realm precisely because he wishes everyone in that realm to be safe. So, if the apocalypse came and Knightshade had the opportunity to stop it by being
stupid noble and sacrificing himself, he would.
So, it all depends on circumstances.
However, there is one other person who is more likely to survive an apocalypse than Knightshade, and that is UnSeelie Commander, Janus Atropa [left]. In terms of fighting, she is his equal. She is an arguably better strategist than him, although it’s a close call. The two of them are what the UnSeelie call “New Moon Children”, meaning that they are blessed by nature and are destined to be great warriors. Unfortunately, in my story, they will never have a chance or reason to work together – they are always on opposing sides.
If the two of them were on opposite sides of this hypothetical apocalypse, I honestly don’t know who would win. It might be that the two of them are the only faeries left standing at the end of it all.
If they had to work together, though…
The only real difference between them is a question of honour. If push came to shove, Knightshade would save Janus’ life if they were on the same team. It is his nature to save as many people as possible, even if they are callous and wicked. He’s just that kind of guy.
Janus, however, is a great reader of people, and a master manipulator. She is also an enthusiastic study of Knightshade because he is one of the few people she considers her equal. In an apocalypse scenario, she would relish the chance to align herself with him, especially to increase her odds of survival. Yet… if the situation arose when she had to choose herself or him, she would always, always choose herself. Knightshade would most likely try to save them both; Janus would throw him under the proverbial bus.
Therefore: if the worst case scenario were to happen, with only a single person left standing, Janus Atropa would be the ultimate survivor.
