Week #2 | My favourite things

Part of the 52 Week Blog Challenge

Thanks to this post title, I’ve had a Sound of Music medley in my head for nigh on three days, so please be patient if I start blathering about mittens on roses or whiskers on crisp apple strudels.

I’m a person who has many hobbies and loves many things, so narrowing my favourite things down to an acceptable list was fairly difficult. Do I go for favourite foods, physical possessions or concepts? I decided to do a Top 5 of the first favourite things that popped into my head.

Favourite kind of party: Fancy dress

If it requires a costume or facepaint, I’m there with bells on (once, literally). Fancy dress parties are my favourite kind of gathering and I throw myself into them with aplomb. Most of my costumes tend to be handmade from things I have dotted around the house. Here are a few of my efforts:

Favourite hobby: Books

s-l500This is a favourite hobby and possession all in one. Books are my passion and have been for as long as I can remember. I read them, write them, collect them and breathe them. The smell of books relaxes me – you know, that soft, musty vanilla smell you get from quality paper – and the sight of them makes me fall in love.

I’m an unabashed book addict and over the last ten years or so, I’ve begun to accumulate leather bound volumes (from the wonderful Easton Press) to complement my bulging shelves. My favourite series from that collection is the King Arthur series (pictured). I fought tooth and nail to get the complete set and I finally achieved my goal this time last year.

Favourite activity: Travelling

Next to reading and writing, travelling is my favourite activity. Not only does the actual act of travelling relax me (the sway of a long train journey is dangerously soothing – I’ve missed my stop more than once) but the exploration factor gives me great joy. I love discovering new countries and places, soaking up their history and culture, and trying new things. I plan to continue travelling extensively through my lifetime, but so far I’ve made it to 17 countries. My three favourite excursions are below!

Favourite weather: Thunderstorms

Is there any weather better than this? The dark, gloomy clouds gathering overhead, the low rumble of thunder that shakes your bones, and the flash of a lightning strike that illuminates the house (which is lit only by a candle). The lashing of heavy rain against the windows, and the feeling of being in the powerful centre of nature as the storm looms directly above your house.

Favourite animal: Dogs

I’m a lover of all animals, really. I have a particular fondness for badgers, manatees, wolves and snails, and I’m even growing used to several cats of my acquaintance. However, the animal than never fails to make my heart melt, and drop me to my knees to cuddle it, is a dog. Here are my (extended) family of dogs – a hopefully growing group!

Go on, let me know what you think!
